How to Choose Clear Vinyl for Your Boat Enclosure

Clear windows make or break a boat enclosure. Pick the right clear vinyl and your side curtains, aft curtains and dodger windows stay clear and easy to roll up for years. Pick the wrong one and you're fighting cloudy, scratched or cracked windows by next season. This guide walks through the choices DIY boat owners actually face: roll vinyl vs. sheets, interleaved vs. non-interleaved, Strataglass vs. other pressed polished sheets, and how to care for your windows once they're on the boat.

Roll vinyl vs. pressed polished sheets

Clear enclosure material comes two ways, and the difference is how it's made.

  • Roll vinyl (double polished) is made in long continuous rolls and polished on both sides. It's the most budget-friendly way to make or replace windows, it's easy to buy just the yards you need, and it's what a lot of DIY window projects start with. See Vicar Clear Vinyl, Interleaved – by the Yard or a Vicar Double Polished Full Roll for bigger jobs.
  • Pressed polished sheets are made one sheet at a time between polished plates, which gives a flatter, clearer, more glass-like view with less distortion. Sheets here are 54" × 110" and come by the drum or box. They cost more and take more care to handle, and they're the choice when clarity is the top priority.

Interleaved vs. non-interleaved roll vinyl

  • Interleaved rolls have a sheet of paper between the layers. The paper protects the surface from scuffs in storage and shipping and makes the roll easier to unroll and cut. Our by-the-yard clear vinyl is interleaved.
  • Non-interleaved rolls skip the paper. They're common for full rolls, like our double polished full roll. Handle and store them carefully so the layers don't scuff each other.

Strataglass vs. other pressed polished sheets

All three sheet products we carry are made for boat enclosure windows and come in 54" × 110" sheets. Here's how they compare:

Strataglass Premium pressed polished clear sheet The name many boat owners and canvas shops ask for by name for top-end enclosures. Full drum
CrystalClear Pressed polished clear sheet Pressed polished clarity at a lower price than Strataglass. A solid pick for DIY enclosures. Full drum
PanoramaFR Flame-retardant clear sheet For projects where a flame-retardant (FR) window material is wanted. Full box
Vicar roll vinyl Double polished roll vinyl Lowest cost, buy only the yards you need, clear or smoke tint. By the yard or full roll

Want a rigid window instead of roll-up vinyl? We also carry Tuffak AR2 scratch-resistant polycarbonate sheet for fixed panels.

What about thickness (gauge)?

Gauge is the thickness of the vinyl. A higher number is thicker. Thicker material is stiffer and harder to roll up, and thinner material is more flexible. Each product page lists the gauges it comes in. The right choice depends on your boat, how your enclosure is built, whether panels roll up, and what you're matching, so we don't give a one-size-fits-all answer here. If you're replacing windows, check what's on the boat now, or call us and talk it through before you order.

Smoke tint or clear?

Clear gives the best view and is the most common choice. Smoke tinted window vinyl cuts glare and adds some privacy, and it's popular for side and aft curtains.

How to care for clear enclosure windows

  • Rinse first. Always rinse salt and dust off with fresh water before you touch the window. Wiping a dry, dusty window is the fastest way to scratch it.
  • Use a cleaner made for clear vinyl and plastic, like Sumner 210 Plastic Cleaner & Polish, with a soft microfiber cloth. Skip household glass cleaners, ammonia, alcohol and paper towels.
  • Protect from the sun. A UV protectant such as 303 Aerospace Protectant helps slow clouding and yellowing. When the boat is covered, keep the windows covered too.
  • Roll, don't fold. Roll panels with the clear side out and a soft cloth or sheet between layers if you can. Folding leaves creases that don't come out.
  • Mind the temperature. Vinyl gets stiff and can crack in the cold. Let it warm up before you roll or unroll it.
  • Follow the maker's care guide for pressed polished sheets like Strataglass. Some cleaners and protectants aren't recommended for coated sheets.

Don't forget the rest of the enclosure

Finish the job with zippers, snaps & fasteners, binding & edge trim, thread and boat top & cover fabric for the frame panels. Choosing fabric too? Read our guide to choosing boat top and cover fabric or Which Fabric Do I Need?
